I’ve spent the past few days, apart from being dreadfully ill, working out goals. They’re not resolutions, really, with the exception of the obligatory but largely doomed pronouncement of GET HEALTHY; they’re more elaborate, long-term projects. On the personal front, I have household organizing that needs to be done — there is now only a narrow, winding track of floor available for navigating the length of the house, thanks to my sprawling civilization of books and clothing. And after probably less consideration than needed and possibly only because I was watching a documentary on Manzanar at the time, I’ve decided to relearn Japanese. My passion for all things Japan was successfully beaten down by two years of studying it at college, where my peers outshone my level of obsession and the instructors focused on the dismally sexist world of Japanese business. But now, years out of practice, I feel the stirrings of a revived passion.
For my professional goals, there is the obvious one: finish House of Cats. There’s more work to be done there than just keep putting out new episodes; after my month-long vacation following NaNoWriMo, I need to take some active steps to get reacquainted with the story. While I’m doing that, I want to start planning out my next project, which still seems to morph into something new every time I think about it. It might be a novel to try sending to publishers and it might be a serial to put out here. But I won’t starting writing the text itself until I’ve finished all the episodes of HoC, which will hopefully be some time before the June 20th finish date.
I have one other goal, short story related, but I’m still not sure how I’m going to go about doing it. Not the writing, which will go as it usually does, I suppose. There are some issues to work out in terms of publication and technology and a lot of tired details that I just don’t have the will to think about too hard at the moment.
So that’s where I stand. Persistent flu notwithstanding, the holidays are over and it’s time to get back to work. It’s been a month since I wrote fresh fiction, with the exception of new bits and pieces needed for HoC eps, and I’m antsy to get back into it. I’ve got more ideas than I know what to do with, but now I’ve got some plans to start gobbling up those tasty ideas.
