Daily Snippet, 1-9-12

I made a decision and said to hell with it. I took a cheap headset from my bag of professional tricks. I pulled the seal from the power source and it fired up. It was bought with cash–real cash, not quick cash cards that could still be traced back to where they had been distributed–and unregistered. There was no paid connection plan on it, just a universal signal tap. I called Nelly on my own headset.

 “Whatcha need?”

“A ride on the signals without a ticket and a data safe house on the other end. I need to send you a data dump from a headset and it’s got to go unnoticed.”

“I’m nothing if not stealthy. You got a flash phone number for me?”

from Incognito: the Vertical Street

YES! First dead body!

Ahem.

It is not a murder mystery in the usual sense and I would very much classify the book as science fiction or science fantasy or speculative fiction. One of those nice boxes, if I must have a box at all. It would be inaccurate to suggest that it in any way follows the usual conventions of the mystery genre. But. It’s still a PI having an adventure and what’s an adventure without some dead folks?

Joyce Sully believes in magic and dragons and ghosts, but is not convinced her next-door neighbors are real. So she writes stories. Really, what else could she do?
